BBC1 Sunday Morning Live Interview
Sharing our project with the UK tuning in on a Sunday
What an amazing experience that was! We had a great time meeting Holly Hamilton and the wonderful production crew who pull the whole show together behind the scenes. If you caught us live, thank you for tuning in, but if you didnt then you can either catch us on bbc iplayer towards the end of the show, or find the interview on the home page and the performance in our music page.
The Kirkwhelpington Sessions
Filming in a beautiful setting..
What a superb day we had filming up in Kirkwhelpington yesterday. We were there working with the lovely Jason and Krzysztof from The Bigger Picture to capture some of our songs in all their live performance finery. The beautiful and acoustically wonderful St Bartholomew’s church provided the backdrop and Northumberland brought the perfect weather. So many thanks to our enthusiastic invited audience who went above and beyond in getting involved (you’ll see in the final edits !). Huge thanks to our funders the Catherine Cookson Foundation and RAY WIND FUNDS for making it all possible - we’re so grateful for your support. And finally big thanks to Carole, Audrey and all at St Bartholomew’s for making us so welcome and allowing us to film there. Once the editing and post production is finished we’ll be launching the films as “The Kirkwhelpington Sessions” and tell you a little bit more about the connections we already have to this special place through our music. More soon !!!
BBC Newcastle Interview
Mary Astell's story through song, inspiring the generations
We were asked to go onto the BBC Radio Newcastle’s breakfast show to share how our latest single ‘Mary Astell’ came about. We had a great chat with presentert Matt Bailey and were delighted that he played our song to the listeners in the North East - our tribute to a forgotten daughter of Newcastle. If you missed it, visit the BBC Sounds website to catch the interview.
The Glasshouse ICM
An amazing kick off to the Autumn Tour 2023
We kicked off our Autumn tour 2023 with a fantastic near sell out show in the Glasshouse International Centre For Music. What an honour to sing beside the Tyne and share the stories of these amazing women from the North East of England. A great evening was made even better when we were joined on stage by the wonderful Dark Sky Voices. This local women's choir drawn from singers in the Tyne Valley brought harmonies and enthusiasm taking each song to the next level - an amazing sound! If you're looking for a choir to brighten up your day, then these are your people. The ladies joined us on our song about the Newcastle United Women's Football team titled ‘Howay The Lasses’ along with our final number of the evening ‘The Women’s Engineering Society’. Every time we've played the songs since, it's tough not to imagine the sound swelling chorus behind us. We look forward to working with you again!
USA Tour 2023 Success!
Oh the places we'd go..
We were delighted to travel to Washington and West Virginia in the USA to play a short series of concerts in association with the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival (ACMF) in July of 2023. The festival took place in a beautiful little town called Harpers Ferry, full of history, geographical significance... and also home to one of the best sandwich shops we've been to yet! We were thrilled to stay in a lovely little house overlooking a field on the sloping landscape down to where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers converge. Although Katie had seen them many times before, Annie, Bronnie and Gareth ran out into the field one evening like children full of wonder when we saw thousands of tiny dancing lights. They were fireflies! We spent a while staring at them in awe, tried to catch a few, then went to bed that night full of inspiration. The following morning Gareth woke up and promptly said "I've got the chords!". Lo and behold, we wrote a song titled Fireflies before breakfast. One day soon we'll be recoridng it so watch this space. One of the great venues we played out in West Virginia was The AMP. This event was part of The Levitt AMP Shenandoah Junction Music Series. The series is supported in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, which partners with towns and cities across America to activate underused public spaces through the power of free live music, creating welcoming, inclusive destinations.

A Tribute To Mary Astell
HTL play at plaque unveiling
On International Women's Day in March 2023 we were honoured to be invited to play some of our songs at a very special plaque unveiling ceremony held at Newcastle Cathedral to honour the life of writer and proto-feminist Mary Astell. Mary is one of Newcastle's forgotten daughters and was way ahead of her time writing about women's choices with regard to marriage and education at the end of the 17th century. Her book "A Serious Proposal To The Ladies" published in 1699 epousing some of these idaeas was a best seller at the time. Her plaque includes one of her most famous phrases: "If all men are born free, how is it that all women are born slaves". we feel a song coming on ...!
Playing To Thousands at St James' Park !
The centre circle is quite a venue to play in!
"On the 1st of May a canny day in 2022!" ...the Lasses aka the Newcastle United Women's Football Team played their first ever game at the famous St James’ Park. Their opponents were Alnwick Town and we wrote a song about that day focusing on not just their 4-0 victory, but also the inspiration that it was to so many young girls in our region to see their heroes on the biggest stage of all. The Lasses played their second ever match at St James's in November of 2022, and we were absolutely bowled over to be invited to play the song as an unofficial anthem in the centre circle of the pitch prior to the game. 22,000 people came to the first game, but 28,500 showed up to their second! Our biggest audience ever … as yet! It was a great honor to support the Lasses as they won another game at the 'cathedral on the hill'.
Autumn Tour 2022
Our first show on the road!
We started touring our unique and inspiring Howay The Lasses show in October of 2022. It began with a sellout event at the Queen's Hall in Hexham where one of the contemporary women we had actually written about came to hear her own song for the very fiorst time live ! The living legend that is Sheila Graber - animator, artist, teacher and all round inspiration - got up out of the audiance as we finsihed playing and invaded the stage to give us all a hug. It was a real privilege to have her there and so wonderful to see how much she enjoyed hearing her song. was actually there! That night, Sheila went home and animated a video to go with the song, which you can view in the music section of our website. We went on to do four more dates across the northeast, up to Alnwick and down to Arnside. Sellout shows, wonderful audiences, and an all round blast. If you’d like to catch us live, check out our events page. We look forward to seeing you there!
